The Power of Social Influence

This is an interactive e-book detailing my research into the psychology of social influence. During the past year I gathered research data about  how web influencers, celebrities and other people gain popularity on social media and attract a following of people. This study goes in depth in how psychology plays a role in how people receive information from others. There is a level of conformity when group mentality is put into play. When addressing any large audience there are a few factors that come into play about how you are perceived such as social standing, intellect, appearance, appeal and legitimacy.

Tragedy Cicadas

Tragedy Cicadas is an interactive mystery installation based on issues regarding environmental sustainability. The title refers to a quote from Jon Stewart on the Daily Show where he compares recurring tragic events to a cicada’s cyclical life span.

The world seems to be in a cycle of environmental disasters, air pollution, oil spills, plastic waste, and more. These stories grip the news for a short while, the public becomes concerned and outraged, but then some interest eventually fades until the next event occurs. This project addresses this lack of action by giving viewers a chance to investigate these issues and implement more sustainable solutions in their own lives.

Losing My Religion

Spurred by the realization that many young adults do not participate in organized religion, Losing My Religion tries to understand the complex realities of faith. This project invited four young adults across different faiths (Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism and Catholicism) to discuss the complexities of their relationship to the faith they were born into and why they no longer choose to practice. This discussion is culminated in a photograph of each participant dressed up as a figure from the faith they were born into, as an ironic but also affectionate way to physically and emotionally understand these connections—positive and negative.

THEY’RE GONNA LAUGH AT YOU.

This project focuses on the deconstruction of the horror genre and it’s treatment of women. I’ll be addressing the tropes used to inadvertently demean and sexualize women in matters that coincide with the male gaze. This project explores the concept of a “final girl” and looking into why horror is so big on not just the brutality of killing on a gendered standard, but the graphic sexual nature of it all. All in all the art piece is not so much a problem solver but a way into starting the conversation on the sexism that feeds on the graphic exploitation of the female body both dead and alive, fictional and real.

Funny Chinese Characters

Chinese characters have experienced 5000 years of historical deposition and have been passed down to the present day. People whose non-native language is Chinese are difficult to understand ancient and beautiful Chinese characters due to cultural differences. 156 Chinese characters are synthesized by decomposing the components, and the Chinese characters are synthesized according to the relationship between the meanings. These characters combine with each other and with other characters to make new words. Through a simple method, it is easier for non-native speakers to understand the meaning and profound logic of Chinese characters.

Ubiety

Ubiety is defined as the state of existing in a specific point in space. This exhibition acts as a modern day surveillance room with content found from those living around you. Through documenting these spacing, I’ve noticed that each room is very reflective of the person’s character and personality. I even learned aspects of their lives that I never knew before by just entering the space, things that could never accurately be portrayed by a mere snapchat or instagram story.

The Prescribed Memory

Inspired by the photographic documentation my mother took as we immigrated to the United States from Brazil, “The Prescribed Memory” explores the idea of a forced narrative. I have always questioned pictures of my younger self living in Brazil because I have no memories of the majority of those images. However, I have to believe it happened because there is proof. How can we learn to trust what we can’t remember?
